March 3rd, 2011
SPRINGFIELD, IL- As the Illinois House of Representatives session began considering legislation in committees this week, State Rep. Maria A. “Toni” Berrios (D- Chicago) took her seat as the Chair of the House Consumer Protection Committee. Berrios is committed to working on legislation that will help all consumers in Illinois.
“I feel very honored to have been chosen to be the new chair for the Consumer Protection Committee and I will work to promote the rights of Illinois’ residents,” Berrios said. “This chairmanship will give me better opportunities to crack down on identity theft, product safety and unfair business practices that are aimed at taking advantage of regular citizens.”
The Consumer Protection Committee works closely with the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division to consider legislation to better protect the general public in business dealings. According to the Attorney General’s office the top consumer complaints in recent years revolve around consumer debt and lending practices, identity theft, home construction contractors, warranties, promotions and business schemes. Consumers can call the Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Hotline, at (800) 386-5438 to report a complaint.
“If you have a concern or complaint as a consumer, please report it to the Attorney General or inform my office so that we can work together to resolve your issue Berrios said. “This is a committee that can help address everyday problems such as product safety, recalls and returning merchandise. I look forward to creating policies to benefit all Illinoisans while looking after the interests of my community.”
Berrios also sits on the Executive, Insurance, International Trade & Commerce, Mass Transit and Tourism & Conventions Committees.
