Berrios Stands Up for Logan Square Schools
April 17th, 2013
CHICAGO, IL – State Rep. Maria A. “Toni” Berrios (D-Chicago) joined hundreds of parents, students, and other concerned community members on Monday in Logan Square to express their concerns regarding the proposed school closings in the Chicago Public School Fullerton Network.
“It was important to join my fellow community members and show my support for them,” Berrios said. “As the daughter of a retired ChicagoPublic School teacher, I know first-hand the importance of receiving a good education. These are not only buildings but rather pillars of our communities.”
Representatives from Chase, Darwin, Goethe, Barry and Schubert attended the meeting that was held at ArmitageBaptistChurch in the Logan Square neighborhood. Earlier that day, Berrios held her first education advisory committee meeting with several local educators and concerned community members. The meeting touched upon topics including school utilization, charter schools, and transparency, among other things.
“Hearing these grassroots perspectives from people that have devoted their lives to educate our youth has helped me prioritize my efforts and actions towards helping our communities,” Berrios said. “I am proud of my community for their hard-work and effort to make their voice heard. It’s an honor to serve such a passionate community.”
