Berrios Files Legislation to Extend Paid Sick Days to More Workers
February 26th, 2014
SPRINGFIELD – State Rep. Maria A. “Toni” Berrios, D-Chicago, has filed legislation allowing all workers to access paid sick days if the company they work for employs 20 or more employees.
“My goal is to provide some much-needed relief to working families,” Berrios said. “Because many workers are on part-time status, they lose out on many benefits; this bill will hopefully improve that, without straining small businesses.”
House Bill 4420 would require employers with 20 or more employees to offer paid sick time to their employees regardless of their full-time or part-time work status. This legislation proposes that for every 40 hours an employee works, their employer must grant them a minimum of one hour of paid sick time, with a minimum of 2 sick days per calendar year.
“A majority of part-time employees are senior citizens, parents, students, and people working multiple part-time jobs just to make ends meet,” Berrios said. “These are hard-working people who have earned the benefits that this legislation would provide.”
