BERRIOS ELECTED CO-CHAIR OF LATINO CAUCUS
SPRINGFIELD (March 19, 2009) – State Rep. Toni Berrios, 39th Representative District, was elected co-chair of the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus this week, along with State Sen. Martin Sandoval, 12th Legislative District.
Berrios and Sandoval are both founding members of the Latino Caucus. Both pledged to work together in partnership for the betterment of Latino Community. Among the major issues they seek to address are: economic growth, job creation, education and to make government services more accessible to the public.
“I am deeply honored to have been chosen by my colleagues to this high position of leadership,” said Berrios. “We have accomplished much since starting this organization, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us.”
Prior to being elected co-chair, Berrios served as secretary for the Latino Caucus. She is serving her third term in the Illinois General Assembly. Her district on Chicago’s Northwest Side includes parts of the Avondale, Belmont Cragin, Hermosa, and Logan Square neighborhoods. Berrios is the first Puerto Rican woman to serve in the Illinois House of Representatives.
Berrios serves on six committees. She is the Chairperson of the Biotechnology Committee and Vice-Chairperson of the Infrastructure Committee, as well as a member of the Executive Committee. She is also a member of the Insurance, International Trade & Commerce and the Mass Transit Committees.
