Berrios Supports Raising Minimum Wage http://toniberrios.com/berrios-supports-raising-minimum-wage/ http://toniberrios.com/berrios-supports-raising-minimum-wage/#comments Wed, 26 Feb 2014 22:19:43 +0000 http://toniberrios.com/?p=1234 SPRINGFIELD – State Rep. Maria A. “Toni” Berrios, D-Chicago, is sponsoring House Bill 3718, which would raise the minimum wage for workers across the state this year.

“The reason for having a minimum wage is to allow for a safety net for all workers. It’s purpose is to formulate a basis of quality of life,” Berrios said. “It is a disservice to our society when thousands of workers are working full-time hours, but are still living well bellow the poverty line.”

House Bill 3718 would amend the Minimum Wage Law. If passed, the proposed bill will steadily increase the minimum wage incrementally to $9.25 per hour on October 1, 2014, $10 per hour on July 1, 2015, and $10.65 per hour on July 1, 2016.

“The Illinois minimum wage of $8.25 has not been altered since 2010, while the cost of living continues to spike upward.” Berrios said. “This increase in pay will put more money in the pockets of working families, allow them to help stimulate the economy with the additional income, and allow for some to no longer need to rely on support services.”

Berrios Honoring Revolution Brewing with Homegrown Business of the Month Award; Hosting Meet-and-Greet http://toniberrios.com/berrios-honoring-revolution-brewing-with-homegrown-business-of-the-month-award-hosting-meet-and-greet/ http://toniberrios.com/berrios-honoring-revolution-brewing-with-homegrown-business-of-the-month-award-hosting-meet-and-greet/#comments Wed, 26 Feb 2014 22:17:56 +0000 http://toniberrios.com/?p=1232 CHICAGO – State Rep. Maria A. “Toni” Berrios, D-Chicago, will host a meet-and-greet at Revolution Brewing on Saturday, March 1st from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. to meet with community members and present Revolution Brewing with the 39th District Homegrown Business of the Month Award for the month of March. Revolution Brewing is located at 2323 N. Milwaukee in Chicago.

“It is my pleasure to recognize Revolution Brewing with the 39th District Homegrown Business of the Month Award for the month of March,” Berrios said. “Since their opening in 2010, Revolution Brewing has become a cornerstone of Logan Square. Revolution Brewing has received continued publicity for their highly rated brewery and pub, but with this award, they are receiving well deserved attention for their commitment to producing, buying and selling local Illinois products.”

Last year, Berrios passed House Bill 1272 into law, which helps to support local businesses and Illinois agriculture by defining the first Saturday in every month as “Eat Local, Buy Illinois Products Day.” She also co-sponsored House Bill 1573, now law, which doubled the production limit for craft brewers, allowing for increased economic growth and employment in this booming industry.

Berrios’ meet-and-greet is free and open to the public. For more information, or to request a nominating form for the 39th District Homegrown Business of the Month Award, please contact Berrios’ constituent service office at 773-736-3939.

Berrios Files Legislation to Extend Paid Sick Days to More Workers http://toniberrios.com/berrios-files-legislation-to-extend-paid-sick-days-to-more-workers/ http://toniberrios.com/berrios-files-legislation-to-extend-paid-sick-days-to-more-workers/#comments Wed, 26 Feb 2014 22:14:47 +0000 http://toniberrios.com/?p=1230 SPRINGFIELD – State Rep. Maria A. “Toni” Berrios, D-Chicago, has filed legislation allowing all workers to access paid sick days if the company they work for employs 20 or more employees.

“My goal is to provide some much-needed relief to working families,” Berrios said. “Because many workers are on part-time status, they lose out on many benefits; this bill will hopefully improve that, without straining small businesses.”

House Bill 4420 would require employers with 20 or more employees to offer paid sick time to their employees regardless of their full-time or part-time work status. This legislation proposes that for every 40 hours an employee works, their employer must grant them a minimum of one hour of paid sick time, with a minimum of 2 sick days per calendar year.

“A majority of part-time employees are senior citizens, parents, students, and people working multiple part-time jobs just to make ends meet,” Berrios said. “These are hard-working people who have earned the benefits that this legislation would provide.”
